Making low level dressage FUN!

Hi All,
I'm looking for some suggestions on how to make low level dressage (with old school horses who are very 'limited') fun??  I teach lessons to a number of ADULTS who ride 'flat only' or dressage on old schoolie hunter horses who cannot do higher level movements etc.  While my student's are progressing as far as thier riding ability/position goes, they are finding the lessons repetative.  I am looking for concrete examples of how to keep them interested, so that they don't feel like we do the same serpentine every week!
Suggestions are helpful!
Thanks!

How about a pas-de-deux? Ride to music!  (there is even a website - equimusic.com)

I second the pas-de-deux! You may even want to make it more complicated, and design a little quadrille (depending on how many riders you have.) It's amazing how very basic work gets difficult when you have to coordinate with other riders at the same time! Try to see if they can stay side by side at the walk and trot, it's harder than it sounds, especially when circling.

In Feudalism it's your count that votes!

Re: Making low level dressage FUN!

I totally agrea.  It is tons of fun, but takes a lot of work to make it happen.  I once did this with a camp I was running.  We did a whole huge pattern.  It took us a week (the full time they where there) to get it half ways desent.  Then at the end of the camp we put on a little show for their parents.  Anyway, everyone had lots of fun and everyone improved in their riding in leaps and bounds.

Thanks
Amber

Re: Making low level dressage FUN!

We did a quadrille for the barn Christmas party - five of us learnt it - (me and four 12 year olds) which was good because one could not ride on the day of! We used music from Canadian brass (Frosty) -
We practiced about 4 times - we would walk pieces of the pattern, then trot.
If you do a search - there are videos on you tube and some fairly helpful videos to 'borrow' ideas from. The kids had a blast (ok, so did I)

Re: Making low level dressage FUN!

the pas de deux/quadrille is a great idea - unfortunately, we only have two riders in each lesson most weeks - and being busy adults, they dont all come every week! So tough! Any ideas of actual exercises to do?
